Playtesting Session
Last Friday, we had a playtesting session and got a lot of helpful feedback on our game. Some of the changes implemented this week come directly from suggestions the playtesters made or general patterns we noticed.
Player Model and Animations
This week, we have been working on importing our new player model and animations. These currently include an idle, walking, puking, and eating animation.
Camera Rework
To ensure the player is visible behind walls and other obstructions, we made it so objects between the player and the camera are transparent. This ensures the player can see what is going on and can continue eating items with ease. Furthermore, the camera also zooms out as the player grows, this ensures that the character model does not take up too much of the screen when reaching larger sizes.
Collectables UI
This was implemented to make it more noticeable when a player collected something. Previously, players may have missed if they collected one of these items, but now it's more noticeable and rewarding. Upon collecting an item, a particle effect will appear and a slime icon will move to the top of the screen making it clear that something has been collected. A sound effect is also played giving the player motivation to continue collecting.
Sound effects
We have also started implementing some sound effects to give the player more feedback for their actions, including when they collect a collectable or eat something.
Challenges and Obstacles
- The camera culling was causing bugs when making the material transparents while they were outlined. Something about the library we used caused the outline to break when we modified the materials for transparency, which took some time to sort out.
